The koytooth is a sabertoothed kyno that evolved from red dyres.
They're a sapient species primarily known for their saber teeth, are divided in packs called Clan, with a territory that's jealously guarded. They survive through the hardships of the wild where every day could literally be your last. They don't have a system of currency, daily jobs, housing, politics, etc. Koytooths are seldom seen around cities and areas tellurians frequent, though they can live there.
They have no subspecies. There's no longer any population of them that's completely isolated enough for genetic distinctions to form.

Body & Mind
Koytooths can bend their shoulders at 90° and rotate their wrist like any primates, namely humans, can do. The species has "paw-hands" similar to the snow dyre which allows them to grab things, yet is less dexterous than red dyres and tellurians. The feet are slightly bigger than canids and have two sharp dew claws. Koytooths are unable to climb trees and hang down like dyres do, having lost that joint flexibility. Their primary focus is the skull, having a single pair of fangs called sabers, flatter stop, wider opening, and a lack of the lower tiny premolars to allow space. Similar to smilodons, they have the strength and muscle power for quick kills.
A koytooth can see in tricolor and said vision is clear, sharp, and equally good during day and night. This gives them the ability to rely on sight just as much as scent to analyze their surroundings. Thick whiskers on their muzzle and above their eyes allow them to feel vibrations in the air and sense approaching dangers. Since dissipating heat loads is difficult, koytooths found in hot areas possess this countercurrent heat exchange called the carotid rete mirabile that allows their brain to stay cool even if the body is overheating. The quantity of blood vessels in pads and ears vary per region. Koytooths adapted to colder regions have less blood vessels, enabling them to retain more heat. They have a naturally large rib cage, very round torso, and a large lung capacity. The tail not only functions like a rudder on a boat to keep their balance, it's also prehensile, able to grab and hold things. Parents may use the tail to cover their face during a storm and as a blanket to keep pups warm.
The species is self-aware and has complex emotions like humans do. Koytooths also have the capacity of speech, reading, and writing. Their language is known as Tirolese. Dens are made of natural materials such as tree trunks, rocks, and dug up holes. Psychological warfare is common and preferred over physical fights, in most cases.

Relationships & Identities
Koytooths are a socially monogamous species with most of them settling down with a single mate, yet there are occasions of polyamory. Like dyres, they're unusually faithful and loving to their mate, to which straying and abuse are nearly nonexistent. While a clan can have several bonded pairs and solos, they're generally led by a duo known as the Leaders - either a pair or siblings. Everyone participates in hunting, patrols, and rearing pups.
There are cases of casanova koytooth and those who trade in favors or have a casual hook up. Males and females can mate at any time of the year for fun and socializing, but only in Lyxis are the females fertile. Receptiveness isn't bound by calendar dates, mind you. If the female mated in Lyxis, she'd have pups around Volcanis and Therris, rare cases of Vitalis if she mated her beginning of Myalis. Considering one female can birth 6 to 8 pups at once, the clan tends to adopt so as to "lighten the load" for the biological parents. About 60% of koytooths are cisgender, yet the species generally doesn't have issues with different identities and sexualities.
Cross-species adoptions and matings only happen with red dyres. Koytooths will also not have "shame" the same way humans do. As such, they'll mate in public, watch others at it, or sit down by an unsuspecting couple. Having great flexibility, dyres are able to take on a variety of sexual positions. [Natural anatomy chart. Life cycle
A koytooth is born dark and gains their colors in their first year. As they reach seniority, they get paler.
Pup - Birth to varis 2 The pups nurse every 4 to 6 hours and still need help regulating their body temperatures. They're completely dependent upon their parents or caretakers for survival. Months later, they learn how to walk, talk, and be more self-sufficient. Young - Varis 3 to varis 6 Between pup and juvenile, this is the most crucial part of their lives. Their skills continue to expand during the remainder of puphood and socialization takes place. Juvenile - Varis 7 to annum 4 They begin to travel with the district and join in hunts. Sexual maturity is reached around that time. They also separate more from the parents and become more independent. Adult - Annum 5 to annum 50 Adulthood is the longest stage and is also when physical and psychological maturity are reached. They must provide entirely for themselves using the skills learned. This is also a significant time because it’s when the life cycle is initiated again by the conception and birth of the adult's own pups. Senior - Annum 51 to annum 60 The individual reaches the stage of wisdom and seniority. Many take their wisdom and foresight to contribute in the advancement of their society. In many cases, the elderly take up a new role of volunteers and mentors who guide the younger generation. They represent a source of information the following generation can tap into. At the end of the adult life cycle, the body begins to deteriorate and eventually ends in death. |

Clan structures
A clan is similar to a pack. Just like real life, there are no "alphas" and whatever else of this debunked "dominance theory." Koytooth packs, like canids, are a family.
In short, a Clan is just another name for a District.
In short, a Clan is just another name for a District.
Composed typically of a leading pair with their pups, siblings, extended family, or wanderers accepted into the clan. Rank order is established and maintained through a series of ritualized fights, body posturing, stalking, staring, talking, growling, and howling, best described as ritual bluffing. Koytooths with this structure prefer psychological acts to physical confrontations, meaning that leading status is based on personality and attitude rather than on size and physical strength. It's possible, however, for some clans to use physical fighting to establish a new leader who has accepted a challenge. Clans have all members assist in responsibilities whether it be hunting, raising pups, or caring for the disabled. In most cases, nobody is seen as superior or inferior, and everybody is valued for their skills. Most individuals will disperse once they reach sexual maturity.
Members aren't set with a single role and may have a few that change over time. Roles define a member's job and aren't set in stone.
Below is a list of common roles, although any district can have customs and variations not found in other clans.
Territory
Their homeland is mainly found in areas far from cities and devoid of tellurians. The territory may contain 8 to 15 adult koytooths, depending on the carrying capacity of the land. Prey are usually small to medium in size and competing predators may share the same land if they pose no threats.

- Matriarch and Patriarch as gender specific & Neutriarch as gender neutral.
The leaders are the main breeding pair (or siblings) who enforce a stable social order, are in charge of most decisions, and maintain a healthy socialization within the district. The Arches are chosen by the family. - Imperator
In large districts, they often have a second-in-command who takes charge of everyone when the Arches are away or unavailable. - Elder
The oldest have the most knowledge, thus often aid the district in decision making, and teach the young valuable skills.
- Watcher / Sentinel
Watchers often patrol the territory, mark borders, stand guard, and are usually the first to fight intruders.
Sentinels are more on the sly, using speed and staying in the shadows when on patrols. They remain unseen and report what they've found. - Neet
Members who don't contribute to the district the same way as the other roles. They can be pups, elders, disabled adults, or any that cannot care for themselves. You don't have to do something ""productive"" to be family. [See Shanidar 1 example.] - Medic
Members with the greatest knowledge in medicine and its applications. They take care of injuries, cleanness, and reduce disease spread. - Techy
Members who are knowledgeable with tools, maps, and technology. They often do repairs around the territory. - Caretaker
Puppysitters, mothers who still feed their young, and guardians of the younglings. - Spiritualist
Leader of the spiritual practices. Can be one or two.

BioluminescenceAll members of the species have a default stripe along the neck, back, and most of the tail. The glow pattern then varies by following certain coat markings. The base color is blue with a golden variant, yet certain genetics can influence said color.
